The sonogram imaging indicates if there is distention or bulging occurring in the lower aorta. If too much distention of the aorta occurs, it can lead to a potentially fatal rupture. An abdominal ultrasound is a preventive screening tool that can be used to identify an abdominal aortic aneurysm so that prompt treatment can be provided prior to aneurysm rupture.
